Kat Holmes is a contemporary painter who is gaining recognition within the contemporary art world. A BA Fine Art graduate from the University of the West of England (UWE), she has been a dedicated practicing artist since the age of 21, maintaining a deeply engaged and immersive relationship with painting. Holmes is currently a studio resident at Document in Bristol, while living and producing work in the North West of England. Her practice is rooted in the exploration of emotionally charged themes, often drawn from personal experiences of love, loss, abandonment, and the shifting nature of memory and identity. Through her work, Holmes revisits these ideas repeatedly, examining both the self and the external world as fluid and evolving constructs. Her paintings are known for their atmospheric intensity and emotional depth. Holmes’ methodology is both intuitive and increasingly methodical. In recent work, she has adopted a more structured, tactical approach to painting, likening the process to solving a mathematical equation. Despite this, the emotional core of her practice remains central. The act of making, revisiting, and resolving a painting is fundamental; her works are not considered complete until they have been thoroughly reworked over time. She maintains a strong personal connection to each piece, often viewing her paintings as extensions of herself.
